rule
category for july - marking
the ball:
1. What is the proper procedure for
marking my ball?
Rule 20 states that "the
position of a ball to be lifted should be
marked by placing a ball-marker, a small coin or other similar object
immediately behind the ball.
If the ball-marker interferes with the
play, stance or stroke of another player, it should be placed one or
more clubhead-lengths to one side."
2. To save time my playing partner
marked my ball for me. Is this okay?
Decision 20-1/0.5 states that "A ball
lifted under the Rules may
be lifted by the player, his partner or another person authorized
by the player."
3. I see many players mark
their ball with the toe of the putter.
Is this okay?
Decision 20-1/12 allows a player, prior to
lifting his ball under a
Rule, to mark the position by placing the toe of a club at the side of,
or behind, the ball.
4. A player didn't have a
marker and scratched the putting green
to mark the
balls position. Is this permissible?
Decision 20-1/16 allows a player to
do this provided the surface of
the putting green is not tested and the scratched line does not indicate
a line for putting. This practice is not recommended due to the
possibility of damage to the putting surface.
5. Can a player use a daisy
or leaf to mark a ball?
Decision 20-1/18 permits this but does not recommend marking the
position of a ball with something that might be blown away.
